Future Sustainability Program

Overview

Investigating the potential for a sustainable future lies at the heart of all of SEI’s work. The Future Sustainability Program at SEI-US compliments this work by focusing explicitly on the future, within an integrative, whole-system perspective. We work in two main areas:

Sustainability Studies: Working with both governmental and non-governmental partners at a range of scales, we assist with sustainability assessment and planning, including capacity building. We have carried out comprehensive studies at the global, regional, and national level, as well as targeted thematic studies on such diverse topics as livestock production, sustainable urbanization, and poverty and income distribution.

Methods and Tools: We engage in a wide range of methodological and tool development for sustainability analysis. We have adapted existing approaches to participatory scenario exercises and developed an approach to constructing scenario models in support of scenario narrative activities. We continually develop new approaches for sustainability assessment. To support this work, our software includes general and sector-specific modeling tools, as well as software to support qualitative scenario development. See the Resources page for more information.
